Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will be sworn in just moments after midnight on New Year’s Day below City Hall Park in an abandoned subway stop, his transition team announced Monday. New York Attorney General Letitia James, a vocal supporter of the young socialist lawmaker, will deliver the oath of office at the Old City Hall subway station in a small, private ceremony.

“When I take my oath from the station at the dawn of the New Year, I will do so humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity, and honored to carry forward our city’s legacy of greatness,” said Mamdani. The Democratic Socialist said he selected that location because it highlighted the city’s history of ambitious goals, with the station being part of the first subway line in 1904.
