Iran’s supreme leader is reportedly hiding in a secret location with extremely limited communication to the outside world as fears grow within Tehran’s leadership following U.S. and Israeli military strikes, CBS News reported Sunday. Mojtaba Khamenei is effectively isolated and can only be reached through a network of couriers designed to conceal his whereabouts, CBS News reported, citing U.S. officials. The report said the heightened security measures have disrupted communications within Iran’s government, complicating ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration and slowing responses to U.S. proposals involving a potential agreement with Tehran.
According to CBS News, when U.S. negotiators send proposed terms or revisions, it can take significant time before Iranian officials are able to consult with Khamenei and relay a response back through the regime’s internal channels. A White House spokesperson declined to comment to CBS News on intelligence regarding Khamenei’s location or the methods Iranian officials are using to communicate. However, a senior administration official told the outlet that Khamenei had agreed in principle to the framework of a draft agreement currently under discussion. President Donald Trump also signaled over the weekend that a final decision could come within days.
