At least 20 people were injured, four seriously, in the resulting pileup at the bottom of the speeding staircase at the transit hub near the Piazza della Repubblica in Rome, according to local newspaper Il Messaggero.
The video posted on Twitter shows the passengers clinging onto the railing as the escalator descends at a terrifyingly high speed.
At one point, a man goes flying down the metal ramp between the up and down escalators.
Many of the passengers were football fans headed to a match against Moscow, and some reported seeing Russian fans dancing and jumping on the escalator as they sang their team song before the accident, according to the Italian paper.
