NEW YORK POST:
The explosive device sent to CNN’s New York headquarters was a pipe bomb and came with an envelope of white powder, police said Wednesday.
“Responding officers identified a device that appeared to be an explosive device and they removed it for investigation,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said at a press conference outside the news network’s Columbus Circle offices.
“Additionally there was an envelope of white powder that was part of that packaging.”
The powder is being tested on site, while the device has been removed to the NYPD’s firing range in the Bronx and will then be taken to the FBI’s lab, officials added.
The package was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan “c/o CNN,” the network says.
A photo released by CNN shows the homemade bomb with a digital timer attached to it and wrapped in black electrical tape, with wires attached to each end.
It arrived in a manila envelope with Brennan’s name misspelled “Brenan.”
The package also bears a return address for US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida), whose name and home state are also misspelled.
There are six stamps on the envelope, but no postmark.
The package was found as the Secret Service also intercepted similar explosive devices sent to Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama, and days after one was found in the mailbox of Democratic donor George Soros.
“It appears that an individual or individuals sent out multiple similar packages,” said Bryan Paarmann, the FBI special agent in charge.
Both Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the spate an act of terror.
“What we saw here today was an effort to terrorize, this clearly is an act of terror, attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence,” said the mayor.
