Satanists in upstate New York are mourning the loss of their beloved “Halloween House” after an arsonist set it on fire early Thursday.
The fire at the iconic home in the “Witchcraft District” in Poughkeepsie erupted shortly after 5 a.m., the Poughkeepsie Police Department said in a statement.
Two people who were inside the home managed to escape without injuries, cops said.
Surveillance video appeared to show a man carrying two gas cans as he walked up to the house.
The man is seen as he splashes liquid on the front porch, ignites it and then runs away, according to police. No arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, members of the Church of Satan were left wondering who could’ve torched their sacred “Halloween House.”
“Everybody’s in shock and everyone in the neighborhood is worried. Whoever did this is going to be hexed by all of us,” church member Isis Vermouth told The Poughkeepsie Journal.
“I feel like this was definitely malicious.”
“I just don’t understand why anyone would want to piss off Satanic witches,” Vermouth added. “Cause now there’s going to be hell to pay.”
The house, which was built in 1900, was previously owned by Joe “Netherworld” Mendillo, a high-ranking member of the church who died last January. The property served as a place where the community gathered to celebrate Halloween every year, the outlet reported.
Peter Gilmore, the church’s high priest, said “It currently seems unlikely that the home could be restored, due to the severe fire damage.”
