Iraqi cleric who led rebellion after US invasion wins election

The fiery Iraqi cleric who led a bloody rebellion against US forces after the 2003 invasion may now hold the keys to Baghdad. The party led by Muqtada al-Sadr – whom the Pentagon previously deemed the biggest threat to stability in Iraq – triumphed in this month’s Iraqi elections. He is poised to lead the formation of a new government. Although al-Sadr himself cannot become prime minister because he did not run in the election, he is the leader of the political party that won the most votes. The cleric, who campaigned on an anti-corruption platform, stated Saturday, “Iraq and reform have won with your votes. We will not disappoint you.”
