Lethal Shellfish Warning Issued For Bay Area

Marin County Public Health officials are warning people not to harvest mussels, clams and oysters along the county coast because they may contain lethal levels of a naturally occurring toxin, paralytic shellfish poison, or PSP.

The California Department of Public Health notified Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matthew Willis and staff Tuesday about a recent mussel sample from the Chimney Rock sentinel station in the Point Reyes National Seashore that contained levels of PSP 37 times the “alert” level.

The California Department of Public Health also issued a warning Wednesday advising people not to eat recreationally harvested mussels, clams or scallops from San Francisco and San Mateo counties, where dangerous levels of PSP were found in mussels.
