A 77-year-old man was beaten by a panhandler who offered him a ride home early Wednesday and robbed him instead, Fort Worth police said.

The victim had just withdrawn money from an ATM at a Texaco station at 1525 E. Berry St. about 3 a.m. when the suspect approached him and asked for some money.

The man gave $5 to the panhandler, who then offered the victim a ride home. They left the convenience store and got into a parked car with a second would-be robber inside.
